Letterkenny Airfield to close at the end of 2019

I recently went on a trip visiting airfields South of the border for the first time, this involved landing at Sligo, Donegal and Letterkenny before heading back to Newtownards when I am based. Great trip and if I get the time I’ll do a write up of it.

Unfortunately while doing PPR to the airfields the owner of Letterkenny Airfield informed me that due to ill health he can no longer keep the airfield open and it is set to close at the end of the year. There are only two aircraft now based there and pilots seem to have re-located to Finn Valley flying club.

This is just a heads up to anyone who may be thinking of going there; try to get there soon as it may not be an option again come January. Fingers crossed though it is able to stay open as it really is a fantastic strip and well worth a visit. It features a narrow 550m runway right on the banks of the River Swilly that leads to the picturesque and historic Lough Swilly with an absolutely beautiful approach from the North.
